Hiking routes in the Font Roja Natural Park

Straddling the towns of Ibi and Alcoy, the Serra del Menejador is home to one of the most emblematic and important natural parks in the province of Alicante: the Carrascar de la Font Roja Natural Park .

The Font Roja Natural Park

The natural area of Font Roja was declared a Natural Park by the Generalitat Valenciana on April 13, 1987, making it the third oldest natural park in the province of Alicante.

The natural park covers an area of 2,450 hectares, located mainly along the Serra del Menejador, between the towns of Ibi (sunny or south side) and Alcoy (shady or north side of the mountain range).

In the Font Roja we find other figures of environmental protection, hosting 4 micro-reserves of flora, in addition to being ZEPA (special protection area for birds) and SCI (site of community interest).

It is the Natural Park with the greatest biodiversity in the entire Valencian Community, with more than 2,400 catalogued species, and one of the best examples of mixed Mediterranean forest, home to deciduous species such as maples, ashes and gall oaks (known as Valencian oak), and unusual species such as yews.

Route 1

The Barranc de l'Infern de la Font Roja

4.5 Km / +250m / Diff. Easy

From the Font Roja Sanctuary and visitor center, we descend through the picturesque wooden stairs to the Font del Rossinyol .

From here, we go little by little into the Barranc de l’Infern (not to be confused with that of Vall de Laguar), through a beautiful path that, in its final part, becomes steeper and rockier, until it finally leads us to the Pla dels GalersFrom there we return comfortably by the forest track to the sanctuary, putting an end to the circular route.

Route 2

Cumbre del Menejador from the Font Roja Sanctuary

7.5 Km / +340m / Easy-Medium

From the visitor reception center of the natural park, next to the Font Roja and the sanctuary, we climbed to the Cumbre del Menejador, 1,356 meters high, the highest point of the Serra del Menejador.

As points of interest, it is worth mentioning the Mas de Tetuán and its centenary yew tree, the impressive Cava Coloma , or the mixed forest of Holm oaks and deciduous trees: the best preserved example of original Mediterranean forest in our province.

The route, about 6 kilometers long and 300 meters uneven, has a moderate-easy difficulty.

Route 3

From Ibi to the Font Roja Sanctuary in Alcoi

18 Km / +800m / Medium-High

From the town of Ibi, we ascend to Mas de Foiaderetes (an old country house) and from there, passing through several snow wells, we reach the Cumbre del Menejador (1,356 m).

After regaining strength at the summit, we descend to the Font Roja Sanctuary and visitor center through the beautiful carboneras path.

The return, we will do it through the Mas de Tetuán and its centennial yew tree , then passing through the Mas de Foiaderetes and ending the route through the Barranc dels Molins de Ibi .

The route, of about 18 kilometers and 800 meters of difference in altitude, has a moderate-high difficulty due to its physical demand.
